Gov’t oil spill commission says BP acted hastily, increased risks

A leaked White House oil spill commission document revealed that BP’s time saving drilling moves increased risks on the Macondo well.

In the document released by the energy industry publication Greenwire, the commission’s investigative unit detailed 11 unnecessary actions that BP and partnering companies undertook leading up to the Deepwater Horizon blowout and resultant Gulf oil spill.

Some of the risky moves were ordered or approved by BP officials on shore and included
using less centralizers than were recommended and failing to install extra barriers and plugs.

The document also faulted contractors Halliburton and Transocean for hasty decisions that increased safety risks.
