A Francis State Beach
fishing boat accident involving a crab fishing boat sends three fishermen into the water after their boat capsizes. The incident took place at approximately 1:00 AM on January 4, 2011, south of San Francisco.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a helicopter and rescue boat were dispatched from their San Francisco stations to assist the capsized 60-foot commercial fishing boat early Tuesday morning. Rescue crews discovered three crew members, all male, clinging to the hull of the boat. They were eventually able to reach the shore on their own. One of the men required medical attention.
The fishing boat, the Phyllis J., is reportedly moored out of Pillar Point Harbor and owned by Larry Fortatdo. The extent of damage sustained by the boat is unknown at this time.
It is believed that the Phyllis J. was on a three-day crab fishing trip when the incident occurred.
A private salvage company was dispatched to the area to help right the ship, as well as assess any environmental risks that the boat’s 2,000-gallon fuel tank might pose to the area. It was undetermined how much fuel was actually onboard the vessel.
The Francis State Beach vessel accident is still under investigation by local authorities. The cause of the accident is still unknown; however, officials are looking into whether fatigue may have played a role in the capsizing.
