Florida had the highest number of boat accidents in the country in 2010. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has put out a list of tips for safer boating:
Be aware. Operators not paying attention to their surroundings is the leading cause of accidents.
Don a life jacket. Do so even if you are a good swimmer because those skills won’t save you if you are knocked unconscious after being thrown out of the boat.
Don’t drink and boat. Not only is it illegal but it reduces reaction time.
Check the forecast. Storms occur quickly and can be dangerous in Florida.
Take your charged cell phone. Call your family and friends if you are going to be out on the water later than planned.
File a float plan. Notify persons ashore of where you are going and when you will return.
Know the rules of the road. There are rules for navigation just as in driving a car.
