Father’s arm amputated in boating accident while tubing with his son

A man's arm was severed by a boat propeller in a Michigan lake accident on Aug. 1.

Nicholas Bowers, 33, of Owasso, Mich., was tubing with his young son in Lake Sanford about 110 miles northwest of Detroit when they fell off their tubes around 12:30 p.m., the Midland Daily News reported.

As a boat driven by Julie Bowers circled back toward them, wave action pushed the boat toward the man and his entire arm was amputated.

It was not reported if Julie Bowers is related to the victim.

A Midland County sheriff's dive team searched unsuccessfully for the arm until 5 p.m., when the search was called off.

It is possible to reattach a limb if it is found within six hours, medical experts say.

A helicopter transferred Bowers to University of Michigan Hospital Monday night. He was listed in good condition the following afternoon.
