Families’ first Thanksgiving without Deepwater Horizon victims

It has been over seven months since the Deepwater Horizon platform exploded. This Thursday will mark the first Thanksgiving holiday that 11 families will spend without their lost souls on the rig.

The Associated Press recently interviewed many of the victims’ family members who shared their feelings on what remains a pall hanging over them into the holiday season. It is the not knowing exactly what happened in the remaining moments of their loved ones.

Peggy, the mother of the late 27-year-old worker Roy Wyatt Kemp, cannot stop wondering if her son survived the first blast, or if he could have been saved, or if he suffered at the end.

Peggy and others want to know why BP and the other companies have not sat down with them and truly explained what caused the blowout on April 20. Rig supervisor Jason Anderson’s widow Shelley asks why corners were cut.

Engineer Gordon Jones’ wife Michele and Blair Manuel’s mother are left to pick up the financial pieces as M-I Swaco, their employer, recently cut off support payments and health insurance.

Most family members have said that the amount of compensation they have received is far below what is adequate for their losses.
