A deckhand was killed aboard a New Jersey based fishing vessel named Mandy Ness. The 44-foot vessel capsized nine miles offshore, near the north-south shipping lanes taken by large ships heading to and from New York Harbor.
Coast Guard officials answered the Mandy Ness's alert from its emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB).
Other fishermen who also also heard the alert were helping the victims when officials arrived on the scene.
The two passengers, Capt. Jim Mears and Trevor Horan were the only ones on board. Horan had been rescued by a local fisherman, but Mears was found dead on the boat.
Horan was released Wednesday from Southern Ocean Medical Center in Stafford.
Meanwhile, a lot of fishermen are starting to think that the Mandy Ness was struck by another boat, which might have caused the capsizing. The sea conditions were considered a flat calm and fifteen mile visibility. There was a lot of shipping traffic that night. Only time will tell if a further investigation will begin.
