Deckhand files claim for maintenance and cure

After suffering severe chest pains on the job as a deckhand on the AET Shelby last year, Arnold S. Barrios was taken to the hospital in Clear Lake, TX. There, a stint was inserted into his heart. After four days, he was released and recuperated for another 11 days at home.

Barrios says he needed much more rehabilitation treatment. However, because he was not provided with payments for short-term disability or rehabilitation from his employer, AET Lightering Services, he claims he had to rush back to work before his was physically ready. As a result, he tires faster than before and must work at a slower pace.

Last month, Barrios filed suit for maintenance and cure benefits in Galveston County District Court. He seeks unspecified monetary damages.
