BP tries to halt payments for future losses from Gulf oil spill

BP is attempting to block the majority of future payouts for the Gulf spill, the Associated Press reported.

Only oyster harvesters should be eligible for future compensation, BP said.

In June, claims administrator Kenneth Feinberg announced that $4.5 billion had been paid to settle almost 150,000 claims out of the $20 billion fund that had been established to pay present and future claims.

BP issued a 29-page document supporting paying "legitimate" claims while objecting to the Gulf Coast Claims Facility "practice of assuming future losses on certain claims."
