BP has released a 300-plus-page report detailing possible causes of the
explosion onboard the Deepwater Horizon that claimed the lives of 11 maritime workers and sent millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. However, the report has raised serious doubts about the study’s impartiality.
The BP internal report, led by newly promoted Mark Bly, was presented as an impartial investigation into what caused the fatal explosion in the Gulf. Many experts are skeptical of the findings indicating that the conclusions appear to be favorable for BP’s legal position.
"An internal investigation is always internal," said Prof. Nagareda, a law professor at Vanderbilt University. "You always have people who are very much a part of the culture of the organization. ...That's not easy to put aside."
Mr. Bly denies that BP’s legal position influenced the work of his team. "There's a lot of my own integrity in this, actually,'' he said. "I was really concerned about it."
However, skeptics still maintain that the internal report conducted by Mr. Bly’s team seemed to benefit BP rather than finding the true cause of the oil rig explosion.
