BP oil sitting on bottom of the Gulf

Those stories in the media accepted as fact about how microbes have eaten up almost all of the Macondo Well oil in the Gulf of Mexico? Well, a high level scientist begs to differ.

Samantha Joye, a marine scientist at the University of Georgia, said she expected that the oil sitting on the seabed last summer would be gone by now. According to her, it isn't.

“Magic microbes consumed maybe 10 percent of the total discharge,” she said at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual conference in Washington, D.C. this past weekend.
Her video and slides taken from submarine dives near the spill site in December appeared to show a significant amount of oil and residue remaining on the bottom.

Joye and her team took 250 core samples across 2,600 square miles of the Gulf. She had already been studying many of those same areas even before the April 20 Deepwater Horizon explosion that triggered the Gulf spill.  Since then there has been a noticeable change, with the bottom littered with dead crabs and stars along with tube worms that suffocated from the oil.

Her report differs from a recent BP spill compensation czar report that predicted the vast majority of the oil will be gone by 2012.
