Rice University Presidential Historian Douglas Brinkley called BP’s Gulf claims process “despicable” and an attempt to “get people to sign waivers for existence living.” Speaking on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” on Monday, Brinkley warned the audience that once the waivers are signed they can never sue BP. He urged Gulf residents to think twice and consult with a lawyer before signing “anything that this company would put in front of you.” Comparisons were made with 9/11 where those who lost loved ones had agree not to sue in order to receive reimbursement.
Remember, full health effects from exposure to oil and dispersants may not be known for years and while it is understandably tempting to take BP’s short term money, in the long run it may end up being a huge regret.
