As we covered in a recent article, a hurt seaman might be advised to place credentials into continuity status by obtaining something known as a Document of Continuity. This will allow you to obtain active credentials, which will not expire and will allow you to maintain your eligibility for renewal. Note: this document does not entitle you to serve as a merchant mariner; it simply allows you to satisfy the requirements for renewal in the future as outlined in Paragraph D of 46 CFR 10.227(d).
Once you apply for a Document of Continuity, you acknowledge that you will not sail until you renew your credential or credentials pursuant to 46 CFR 10.227(d).
