Alaska Fishing Boat Accident Claims the Lives of Five Clam Diggers

An Alaskan fishing boat accident involving a skiff loaded with razor clams claims the lives of five clammers. The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon, May 17, 2011, near the western shore of Cook Inlet.

According to Alaska State trooper Thad Hamilton, the 22-foot skiff was more than likely swamped by large waves. Hamilton reported that all five men either drowned or succumbed to the frigid water, even though one clammer was wearing a life jacket.

Noel Garcia, 42, of Aberdeen, Washington, reportedly saw the danger and refused to get into the boat. He said that the boat was overloaded with more than 100 buckets of razor clams, each weighing approximately 35 pounds. He also indicated that it was windy, and the seas were rough.

The maritime accident victims have been identified as 42-year-old Roberto Ramirez, Ramon Valdiva, 31, of Oregon, Jose Rever, 24, of Los Angeles, Avelino Garcia, 36, of Oregon and Jose A. Sandoval, 34, of Bakersfield, California.
