Alabama Governor Robert Bentley and Attorney General Luther Strange released a public service announcement (PSA) intended to remind victims of the Gulf oil spill about the lawsuit deadline. The PSA is a result of the fatal explosion that occurred on April 20, 2010, onboard the Deepwater Horizon that claimed the lives of 11 maritime workers and created one of the worst ecological disasters in America’s history.
A trial date has been set for February 2010 to determine whether Transocean and other companies can limit what they pay to claimants under maritime law. Transocean owns the Deepwater Horizon, which exploded last year. The litigation is being overseen by a New Orleans federal court.
“There is an important deadline approaching that Alabamians need to know about, said Governor Bentley. “In order to preserve the ability to recover money damages against Transocean and be included in the February 2012 trial, one must file a claim with the federal court by April 20, 2011.”
The lawsuit is designed to allow individuals and companies, which suffered personal injury, loss of earnings, property damage and other economic losses from the catastrophic oil spill participate in the lawsuit.
“I am dedicated to working with General Strange to make sure Alabamians are informed of this fast approaching deadline,” said Governor Bentley.
Victims can file a claim by approving a direct short form. A copy of the short form has is available at
