2010 could be record year for piracy

In 2009 there were 857 seamen taken hostage by Somali pirates. In 2010 so far 793 hostages have been taken, which is on pace to break last year’s record total. Why has the number of hostages increased but the number of reported attacks decreased—217 vs. 140 so far this year? Experts say it’s because pirate gangs have become much more violent through the use of automatic weapons and grenades which force vessels to stop.
